Introducing Chris van der Drift

Daeli Journal - Chris - Featured

We were lucky enough this month to be able to chat to Chris van der Drift, a professional NZ Racing Driver, Daeli-sponsored athlete and long-time friend of the brand.

Chris currently competes in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo and is currently based in Bali, holding 6 New Zealand Championships and 6 North Island Championships locally. Internationally Chris has competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup, Asian Le Mans, Stock Car Brazil, International GT Open and many more.

Most recently, Chris has raced the Ferrari 296 GT3 in the Bangsaen Grand Prix, Aston Martin at the Bathurst 12hour and Lamborghini Huracan in round 1 of the 2026 series opener in Malaysia.

Chris talks to us about his journey into racing, and how Daeli fits into his every day.

Tell us about how you got into being a racing driver and where that has taken you today.

I first went to the kart track when I was around 3 years old when my father was racing karts. I had my first turn when I was 7 years old, and then got my first go-kart the following Christmas.

Started racing karts when I was 8 years old and moved to Europe in 2003 - my first car racing season was 2004 in Formula BMW and the rest is history!

What has been your favourite race so far?

Racing A1GP in Taupo was really special as I was representing NZ, but my second favourite event would have to be when I won my first championship in Europe.

What's your advice for anyone looking to get started in the sport?

Generally in racing there are more down times than up so enjoy those “up” moments when they are given to you, but most importantly make sure you are enjoying what you are doing.

Where does Daeli fit into your daily rituals?

For racing now heading to the track without my Daeli is like forgetting my helmet, it just doesn't happen.

It is pretty hot inside the cars, reaching up to 60 - 70 degrees, so to be hydrated with the right supplement is my #1 priority.

I am currently based in Bali so whenever I’m feeling parched or like water isn't cutting it, having a sachet of Daeli sorts that out on the spot.

What is one thing you do to transform your day?

Sleep enough the night before and try to drink enough water.

What is one non-negotiable daily ritual?

Haha, open my eyes in the morning and be there for my family!
